Effect of mothers¢¥ oral health behaviour and knowledge on dental caries in their preschool children





Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess how mothers¢¥ oral health behaviour, knowledge, and sociodemographic characteristics influence on dental caries status of their children. The 110 children and their mothers were selected for this study. The children were 5 or 6 years old in the 3 daycare centers in Daegu, Korea. Data were collected by oral examination on children and self-administrated questionnaire on their mothers. The questionnaire was surveyed mothers¢¥ behaviour and knowledge of oral health and their socio-demographic characteristics. The-findings of this study were summarized as follows; 1. Significant difference was detected for children¢¥s ds index according to mothers¢¥ educational level and
child birth order.
2. Mothers¢¥ tooth brushing frequency, preventive dental visit, and oral health knowledge were significantly related to children¢¥s dental caries status.
3. The multiple regression analysis illustrated that mothers¢¥ preventive dental visit and child birth order were significantly associated with ;the children¢¥s ds index, respectively. It supposed that mothers¢¥ preventive dental visit played an important role in decreasing children¢¥s tooth decay and that the not eldest group of children had higher risk of dental caries than the eldest one.
